San Diego Waterfront Landmark Set for Redevelopment
San Diego-based Playground Concepts plans to redevelop a 2.6-acre site on Mission Bay into a waterfront restaurant and event center. The long-shuttered Mission Bay Visitor Center will be transformed into Shoreline Mission Bay.
The design and development team includes Bradley Schnell, Greg Van de Velde and Kristine Schnell, who’ve been involved in San Diego restaurants, Bottega Americano and Mister A’s. They plan to revitalize an existing 4,600-square-foot building, while preserving architect Richard Lareau’s 1969-era seashell-shaped design.
The renovation will bring a casual, counter-service eatery, with outdoor seating, a children’s play area, public information services, and beach and bike rentals. The San Diego City Council approved a 25-year ground lease for the site, located off Interstate 5 at 2688 E. Mission Bay Dr. The proposed $3-million project is slated to break ground later this year.
Cushman & Wakefield’s Matt Davis represented the development team.
