San Antonio: We’re No. 6! In Solar

An analysis issued by Environment America has placed San Antonio No. 6 for installed solar capacity in the United States. The Alamo City overtook New York City after installing 44 megawatts of capacity from 2016-2017, and is the only Texas city ranked in the top 10 of this national report. San Antonio has 161 mw of solar capacity, compared to 117 in 2016, putting it behind Los Angeles, San Diego, Honolulu, Phoenix and San Jose.

“The progress San Antonio’s made has been very impressive,” said Luke Metzger with Environment Texas, the Austin-based branch of Environment America. He went on to say that multiple solar incentives from the city-owned and operated CPS Energy has helped boost the use of solar power in the metro. The analysis didn’t factor CPS Energy’s large-scale solar farms outside the city limits, which amounts to an additional 550 mw.
