San Antonio is Seventh Solar City in the U.S.

A new report by Environment Texas Research & Policy Center ranked San Antonio the first solar city in Texas and the Southwest, and the seventh in the United States. The city added 25.9 megawatts of solar power in 2018, totaling 186.9 MW of solar energy capacity for the year.

Locations where solar power was installed throughout the city included several H-E-B grocery stores, the Will Smith Zoo School and the San Antonio Federal Credit Union. This put the Alamo City ahead of Indianapolis and behind New York City in the national rankings.

Meanwhile, Austin totaled 50.6 MW of solar power, El Paso 38 MW, Houston 20.9 MW and Dallas 9.6 MW. The Environment Texas Research & Policy Center pointed to a new solar energy bulk purchasing program available through the state, as well as bills in the legislature, as opportunities to further boost the use of solar energy.
