Sales Tax Revenue Surges in the Rio Grande Valley
Sales tax revenue in Hidalgo and Cameron Counties surged in July 2018, increasing by double digits, year over year. According to a report from the Texas Comptroller’s Office, Hidalgo County’s revenues had increased by 10.2%, while Cameron County showed a 10% increase.
Both counties, located on the Texas-Mexico border in the Rio Grande Valley, did better than other border counties, noted Matt Ruszczak with the Rio South Texas Economic Council. He said the tax revenue increase was even more remarkable, as the Peso was down in July 2018, versus the year before.
He indicated that oil and gas are among the reasons for the positive economic boost, noting that the RGV economic outlook remains positive.
