Safeway Grocery Distribution is No Longer in Peril With Strike Averted
Safeway grocery distribution throughout the Puget Sound area was on the verge of grinding to a halt as a group of around 175 members of Teamsters Local 174 and 500 members of Teamsters Local 117 were on the brink of a strike. But a record deal averted the almost-certain strike for the group of workers.
After a breakdown in negotiations left Local 174 workers poised for a strike, a late-night recommended agreement was reached and ratified by the members on Saturday morning. The historic three-year agreement addresses nearly every issue posed by the unions.
The group consists of all the Safeway tractor-trailer drivers who deliver groceries from Safeway’s Auburn distribution center to Safeway/Albertsons stores, all warehouse workers in the Auburn, Bellevue and Kent Distribution Centers, dispatchers and recycling center workers. The teamsters pointed out the sacrifices made by the Safeway workforce, who worked many hours during the pandemic.
