An intersection in Queens, NY, shows why New York City is becoming safer for pedestrians. A pedestrian island and a little paint on 138th Street shortens the area where pedestrians are vulnerable to traffic.

Such ideas are important, as developers add new apartments and condominiums to some of the busiest streets and most dangerous intersections in the city, like Flatbush Avenue in Downtown Brooklyn. No one wants to raise a young child in a place where they might be run over.

Fewer people died in traffic fatalities in New York City in 2016 than any other year on record going back to 1910. Through measures such as “Vision Zero,” the city has added “head-starts” that provide more protected areas for pedestrians to 1,248 intersections throughout the city.
