The proposed downtown San Antonio baseball park is a lot like the weather. It gets a lot of discussion, but not much has been done about it. Now, the City Council has okayed a measure that creates a stadium funding scheme that is the biggest step taken yet toward getting the park built. The center city stadium will serve as the San Antonio Missions’ new home and is expected to open in time for the 2028 baseball season.

The San Antonio Business Journal reports it could spark a $1 billion economic impact as part of a mixed-use development.

The ordinance allows the creation of a special authority that will own the stadium and can raise public money to fund it. The authority will issue bond funding to construct the stadium, which is expected to cost approximately $160 million.

The team is owned by a group that includes Bruce Hill, Weston Urban co-founders Graham Weston and Randy Smith, media veteran Bob Cohen and San Antonio Spurs Chairman Peter J. Holt.
