S. Miami Mall Owner Seeks Massive Makeover
The owners of the mostly empty Shops at Sunset Place in South Miami have proposed a massive redevelopment with more than 1,500 residential units. South Miami’s Planning Board will consider a site plan to redevelop the Shops at Sunset Place, an underperforming mall at 5701-5795 S.W. 72nd St. (Sunset Drive). Midtown Development is the developer. Grass River Property will manage the project. Heatherwick Studio is the project’s design architect, with ODP serving as the architect of record.
The Shops at Sunset Place opened in 1999. It currently has about 524,180 square feet of retail space, a movie theater, 40 apartments and a small number of offices.
Called Sunset Place, the new project would total 1.47 million square feet, with 1,513 multifamily units, 287 hotel rooms, 1,300 theater seats, 60,000 square feet of offices and 150,000 square feet of commercial space—about 75% of that restaurants and 25% retail. There would also be 2,418 parking spaces.
