S.A. Building to Be Demolished for New Recreation Center
The city of San Antonio announced plans to demolish a 1950s building at Woodlawn Lake Park, which currently houses the Berta Almaguer Dance Studio. Once the 13,421-square-foot, 1950s building has been demolished, a modern recreation center, twice its size, is planned on the site at 138 S. Josephine Tobin Dr.
The dance studio will close in mid-September, following summer dance classes. Demolition will follow in October. The estimated cost of construction on the project is $3.4 million, with the new building to deliver by April, 2022.
Douglas Architects designed the new recreation center, which is planned to hold three dance studios and a library/lounge. The Historic Design Review Commission approved the project, with stipulations that included re-use of materials from the current structure, and that Berta Almaguer’s name be retained, with a gallery paying tribute to the Mexican and Spanish-dance instructor, who retired in 1970.
