RGV Cities Mull Need for Next International Bridge

The cities of McAllen and Mission TX agreed to spend nearly three-quarters of $1 million for a study to determine if another international bridge between the United States and Mexico is needed – for trucks. If the project moves forward, it would be called Madero Bridge, and could likely be built near Madero, TX, south of Mission. It would also be the 12th international bridge in the Rio Grande Valley.

The cities of McAllen, Mission and Hidalgo, also in Texas, share the Hidalgo and Anzalduas bridges, which provide transport between the U.S. and Mexico. Hidalgo handles passenger cars, whereas Anzalduas takes passenger cars and only empty southbound tractor-trailers. The Pharr bridge handles trucks, but according to McAllen city manager Ray Rodriguez, the commercial crossing is backing up.

“The number of trucks is going to grow, and we feel that if we do not construct the proper infrastructure at Anzalduas and/or Madero, companies are going to leave the area,” he told KRGV-TV, Channel 5.
