RFP Seeks Design Team for $400M Lab in Harlem
The New York City Economic Development Corporation has issued an RFP seeking a design team for a new Public Health Lab (PHL). The city has set aside some 230,000 square feet of space at the Harlem Hospital Center for the project. The Wall Street Journal reported in January that it would cost about $400 million.
Included in the new PHL will be laboratories and support spaces; offices and a walk-in clinic. It will replace the current location on East 26th Street, in use since the 1960s. The deadline for submitting design proposals is July 10.
Established in 1892, the PHL was the world’s first municipal bacteriological laboratory. It performs testing on more than 200,000 specimens it receives each year.
