Rezoning of Staten Island’s Bay Street Corridor Clears Key Hurdle
A rezoning of Staten Island’s Bay Street neighborhood cleared a key hurdle recently when the City Council’s Subcommittee on Rezoning and Franchises signed off on it. The rezoning still needs to go before the full City Council for final approval.
“This subcommittee vote is the first step in bringing more open space, jobs, 1,300 affordable homes, infrastructure improvements and more to Bay Street,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said after the subcommittee vote. “The Bay Street Neighborhood Plan will create a more affordable neighborhood that opens the doors of opportunity to residents from all walks of life.”
The Staten Island Advance reported that the Bay Street Corridor rezoning is intended to spur the creation of more affordable housing and at least 1,800 mixed-income apartments. However, it’s also expected to bolster ongoing efforts to buy up and develop North Shore properties, as large projects begin to rise along the waterfront.
