Return to NYC Offices Will Take Longer Than Expected

Even as a CoreNet NYC survey makes it clear that office occupiers don’t plan to leave the city, a separate Partnership for New York City survey shows that a return to full office occupancy won’t occur soon. Just 26% of employees are now expected to return by year-end, with 54% expected to return by July 2021.

The Partnership’s survey found that fewer employees have returned to the office than previously anticipated. Eight percent of employees had returned to the office as of mid-August, a 20% drop from the 10% projections made in late May. Twenty-eight percent of employers don’t yet know their plans for bringing employees back.

The status of COVID-19 was ranked as the chief concern in determining the pace of employees returning to the office by 76% of respondents. That compares to employee preference for continuing to work from home, which ranked as the least important factor.
