Responsible Growth Initiative Introduced in Irvine
Citizen-led Irvine for Responsible Growth introduced an initiative that, if passed, will require developers to secure voter approval for any project in Irvine, CA that adds significant traffic, 40 or more housing units or 10,000 square feet of non-residential use and requires general plan or zoning changes.
Initiative backers contend it is a way for residents to compete against “the paid lobbyists and campaign contributions from the development community.” They say it is not a politically aligned initiative, but a grass-roots effort intended to restore the citizen voice into the process.
Opponents note the initiative could hurt economic growth, and slow down crucial developments. Some fear it could hurt Irvine’s chance of landing Amazon’s $5-billion HQ2 mega-deal.
At least 12,000 signatures, which is 10% of Irvine’s registered voters, must be submitted by March 2018 for the proposal to qualify for the November 2018 ballot.
