RentCafe Report: Silicon Valley Apartment Rental Market is Heating-Up

Report: Share of Renters Soaring in LA and SF

A new study from online rental listing website Rentcafe indicates that in 2021, more U.S. households rented that at any point in the last 55 years. In the report, Rentcafe examined over 1,500 zip codes from across the country and discovered that the fastest-growing renter populations are in city cores, and Los Angeles and San Francisco make up one-third of the top 20 zip codes with the highest share of renters.

San Francisco’s Treasure Island, home to 2,100 residents, is one of five zips nationwide that is composed of 100% renters, while the Presidio neighborhood is sixth in the country at 99.3% rented. Los Angeles, however, is the absolute U.S. leader with 46 zip codes that have a high majority of renters.

According to the Rentcafe study, two neighborhoods in DTLA and one in the WestLake area are nearly 100% renters-only zips, and Southeast Los Angeles has the most populous neighborhood where the majority of people rent, almost 78,000.
