Report: Ports of Seattle, Tacoma Show Signs of Rebound
North American port activity surged in 2024, with container volumes rising 11.2% to 61.3 million TEUs across the top 15 ports, according to Savills 2025 Ports Report. The report includes weekly port congestion metrics, and warehouse labor dynamics, including supply, demand and cost, as well as details on massive capital improvement projects at local ports.
Last year marked the third busiest year on record, with the Ports of Seattle and Tacoma bouncing back from 2023, which saw the lowest TEU volume since the creation of the Northwest Seaport Alliance. In total, the Seattle and Tacoma ports handled 2.6 million TEUs in 2024, a 16.7% increase year over year, and ended the latter half of the year on a high note, averaging nearly 240,000 TEUs per month from July through December.
Additionally, the second phase of a modernization project at the Port of Seattle was completed in April 2024 to deliver infrastructure improvements that attract larger container ships and associated cargo.
