Report Details San Diego’s Life Sciences Growth
A new study by the San Diego Economic Development Corp. ranks San Diego No. 2 nationally as a center for genomics research and products. Boston leads the nation, with San Francisco coming in No. 3 in the rankings, followed by San Jose and Salt Lake City.
The study found that the genomics-related sector contributes $5.6 billion to San Diego county’s economy and directly creates more than 10,000 jobs. The report rankings took into account things like research and venture capital funding, genomics patents and the number of graduates with a genomics education.
San Diego County produced the most genomics patents, with 371 issued from 2014 to 2016, and claimed the largest number of genomics-ready graduates, relative to workforce size. In 2016, San Diego received 22% of all genomics venture capital funding in the U.S. ($292 million).
