Report: California #1 in U.S. with Most Coworking Spaces

CoworkingCafe, a nationwide coworking space search website, reports that California leads the nation with 1,188 coworking spaces, nearly double that of second place Texas. On a metro level, Los Angeles is #2 nationally, with 588 properties, slightly behind first place New York’s 594.

Demand for flexible space has taken-off, as workers are opting for a more balanced work environment, especially following the pandemic. According to the report, the number of people participating in coworking spaces today has more than tripled since 2015.

California’s startup environment has made coworking a very attractive option. The “Bay Area”, not including San Francisco, ranks 10th on the list with 171 coworking spaces, while the city of San Francisco has 134, ranking 13th nationally.

The Coworking Cafe report also tracked work-from-home (WFH) numbers using Census data, and between 2019 and 2021, San Francisco was #3 in the U.S. with a whopping 516% increase. Los Angeles WFH totals jumped 266%, San Diego 217% and Irvine 197%.
