Renovation on W. 79th Street May Lift Area
Renovation of a vacant city block on W. 79th Street near Leo High School on Chicago’s South Side could be the first stage of a neighborhood renaissance.
The school itself would like to use the north side of the block between Peoria and Green streets to build a sports complex to be shared with the community. It would include a basketball court, sprint lanes for track programs, seating and offices. Concerts could also take place there.
Meanwhile, a 55,000-square-foot former furniture showroom across the street will be repurposed as a “Healthy Lifestyle Building,” according the Greater Auburn Gresham Development Corp., which bought the building for $600,000 in December 2016.
The vision, agency director Carlos Nelson said, is “physical health, mental health, financial health, you name it. Health and wellness, education, all wrapped around living-wage jobs.”
His ultimate goal is to “really bring back to life an entire vacant block on our key commercial corridor.”
