Related Midwest Tries Pop-Up Retail

Related Midwest is bringing pop-up retail to Randolph Street, as a temporary use for a site that will later contain a 58-story tower including the Midwest’s first Equinox Hotel. Box Shops by Related will contain six pop-up shops made of refurbished shipping containers.

Box Shops is a collaboration with Chicago-based architecture firm Latent Design, whose Boombox concept has brought single-container pop-ups to several Chicago neighborhoods, the Chicago Tribune reported. Equinox, known primarily as a fitness club, will occupy one of the containers; locally-based Haymarket Pub & Brewery will run a bar and beer garden in another.

“There are more lucrative things we could do,” Mike Ellch, VP of development at Related Midwest, told the Tribune. “Parking would make more money. This brings more awareness to the site, and to our partner Equinox. Our projects take a long time to develop, so this is something we can have fun with.”
