Red Bird Returns – The Mall, That Is

Southwest Center Mall, which is losing its Macy’s anchor, has plans to be refreshed, redeveloped and upgraded. It will also go back to the name “Red Bird,” the identity it had when it first opened in 1975 on Camp Wisdom Road in South Dallas.

“Everyone calls it Red Bird already. Southwest Center Mall never stuck,” said Dallas investor Peter Brodsky, who purchased the common areas of the mall in September 2015. Brodsky made his remarks to residents at a recent meeting that detailed plans for the more than one-million-square-foot center. Redevelopment plans include a Marriott Courtyard hotel, new office and green space, a tech incubator, and upscale apartments.

In addition to common areas, Brodsky acquired other parcels, including the former Dillard’s land. He controls 80 acres, including buildings on Camp Wisdom and Westmoreland Roads. Brodsky hired Omniplan for the designs. Omniplan handled renovations for Highland Park Village and NorthPark Center’s expansion.
