Rebuilding of Ground Zero Church to Resume After Two Years

Rebuilding of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church near the World Trade Center, stalled for the past two years, will resume under the supervision of a newly formed nonprofit. The Friends of St. Nicholas will aim to resume construction with a two-year target to complete the church, which will also include a nondenominational shrine.

The nonprofit organization’s 13-member board will be chaired by Dennis Mehiel, former chairman of the Battery Park City Authority and the chairman of US Corrugated, which he founded in 1966. Richard Browne, managing partner of Sterling Project Development Group, will serve as COO of construction.

Construction of the new St. Nicholas church was halted in December 2017 when the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese ran out of funds to continue the $80-million project, designed by Santiago Calatrava. The original church at 155 Cedar St. was destroyed in the 9/11 attacks.
