Ranking U.S.’s Hardest-Working Cities
Americans are among the world’s hardest-working, logging more hours per worker than most industrialized countries, including Germany, France, and the United Kingdom, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. In fact, American’s worked on average 44.5 hours per week in 2017, according to Gallup. That is up from 42.8 hours in 2012.
The lack of strong unions, flat wages and work regulations that promote greater working hours were cited as reasons behind the high U.S. work hours.
Workers in the 116 largest U.S. cities were ranked by WalletHub to determine the hardest-working. Researchers looked at nine different factors, including average workweek hours, employment rate, share of workers leaving vacation time unused, and share of workers with multiple jobs.
