Rail Car Factory Will Be Built Despite “Trump Trade War”
Mayor Rahm Emanuel declared victory Thursday on a rail car facility that China-based CRRC Sifang will build on the city’s Southeast Side. Concerned that President Trump’s enactment of tariffs against Chinese goods jeopardized the project, Emanuel flew to China for meetings that a statement from the city described as “productive.”
CRRC Sifang was awarded a contract last year to deliver up to 846 next-generation rail cars to the Chicago Transit Authority, using Chinese components. The company will build a $100-million facility here, creating more than 350 jobs. The local residents who will work at the new facility are expected to travel soon to China to receive training.
“This project and the hundreds of jobs it will create should not fall victim to the Trump trade war,” said Emanuel, “Thanks to Chicago’s strong international partnerships, this project is moving forward and creating a new economic engine on Chicago’s Southeast Side.”
