Raiders Break Ground on New Stadium in Las Vegas

Ground was broken on the 65,000-seat domed stadium in Las Vegas that will house the NFL’s Raiders football team in 2020. A gathering of 600 celebrities, former players, NFL officials and Nevada politicians commemorated the construction milestone for the $1.9-billion facility.

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval remarked, “Now it’s real, right?” Raiders owner Mark Davis and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell also took part in the event on the 62-acre site at Interstate 15 and Russell Road.

NFL owners approved the Raiders’ relocation in March, with 31 of the 32 owners voting in favor of the move. Nevada lawmakers approved $750 million in public funding for the stadium. The Raiders plan to play at the Oakland Coliseum in 2017 and 2018, but could play in a different venue in 2019.
