Purchase of National City Affordable Housing Moves Ahead
Two non-profit affordable housing developers are preparing to move ahead with the purchase of the Kimball and Morgan towers in National City from the city, and begin renovations of the properties next year.
Community Housing Works and Mercy Housing will pay $28.5 million upfront for the two nine-story buildings, which were built in 1986 (Kimball) and 1978 (Morgan), then pay an additional $12.2 million over the next 55 years. Annual payments will include $475,000 for the city to keep managing the George H. Walters Nutrition Center at Morgan Tower, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.
The two companies develop, renovate and manage affordable housing properties in San Diego County and elsewhere.
The Kimball and Morgan work will entail bathroom and kitchen upgrades, improvements to common areas, fire safety systems, exhaust fans, roofs, windows, balconies and railings. Each building has about 150 units.
Renovations are slated to begin in May 2019.
