Public Works to Austin: Five Bridges Need Repair

In the wake of the March 2018 bridge collapse at Florida International University, the city of Austin’s Public Works noted five local bridges requiring repair. They are:

  • Redbud Trail/Emmett Shelton (Lady Bird Lake)
  • Barton Springs Road (Barton Creek)
  • Delwau Lane (Boggy Creek)
  • William Cannon Drive (Railroad Overpass)
  • Slaughter Lane (Railroad Overpass)

Austin has 434 bridges with spans longer than 20 feet. Based on a 2016 report from the Texas Department of Transportation, 388 bridges in the city were considered from “good” to “excellent,” 40 received a “satisfactory” rating and six received a “fair” rating. Funding is being sought for the structures through bonds and from capital improvement funds.
