Proposed Plans Would Connect Kennedy Center to the National Mall

A recently released urban design concept from the National Capital Planning Commission calls for expanding the National Mall by more than 20 acres. The study shows a vision for repairing the damage resulting from the construction of I-66 between K Street NW and the National Mall and how to improve the experiential transition between Rock Creek Parkway, the Kennedy Center, the National Mall and downtown.

Planners from the National Capital Planning Commission, the District government, and the private sector created a collaborative conceptual design aimed at growing the National Mall to the northwest, with the Kennedy Center serving as a western anchor.

This proposed expansion involves “decking over” the current transportation infrastructure network to create more green space and restore the area’s natural beauty. The plan, which builds on an existing long-term plan from 2009. was presented to the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts for review and approval.

Other recommendations for the site include forming a designated committee to champion the vision,
lobbying for congressional support, and designing a grand boulevard on E Street as part of a new cultural district.
