Prologis Breaks Ground on Former Oakland Army Base

Prologis broke ground on Oakland Global Trade and Logistics Center at the city’s Oakland Army Base. The three-building logistics facility is planned for 750,000 square feet on the shuttered base.

The initial phase includes a 256,136-square-foot speculative building slated to be completed in mid-2017, with two more buildings following in subsequent phases. When the project’s first phase is complete, annual shipping could increase by as much as 200,000 cargo containers, and rail could handle another two-million metric tons of bulk product imports and exports.

Plans have been in the works for nearly a decade to redevelop a $1.2 billion project at the military base that closed in 1999. Using both private and public funding, the project promises to help restore the local economy.
