Program to Test for Lead Paint Launches at Harlem Public Housing
The de Blasio administration has launched an $88-million program to detect lead in paint at New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) complexes. The tests to be conducted on 135,000 NYCHA apartments built before 1978 will be carried out with portable X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyzers.
First to undergo testing are the 574-unit Harlem River Houses (pictured) in Harlem, built in the late 1930s. Seven additional complexes in Harlem, the Bronx and Brooklyn will be tested beginning May 1, with the schedule for additional properties to be announced in the coming months.
“Public housing residents deserve apartments that are safe and lead-free,” said City Council Member Rory Lancman. “Testing is essential for the city to know exactly which apartments have lead-based paint, and take prompt remedial action.”
The city issued an RFP for testing with XRF analyzers this past December. Seven contractors were selected to carry out the tests.
