Pro Soccer Returning, Complete with Stadium
Following a three-year hiatus, professional soccer will return to Austin in 2019. And, the United Soccer League (USL) franchise will play in a brand-new, 5,000-seat stadium to be located at Circuit of the Americas (COTA), in southeast Austin. COTA chairman Bobby Epstein will be the as-yet-unnamed club’s majority owner.
The stadium will be located between the Austin 360 Amphitheater and COTA’s grand plaza, and will represent an expansion of the new FC Barcelona training academy, which opened in August 2017. The cost of the stadium – or a groundbreaking date – has not been determined. USL venues with similar capacities cost from $5 million-$10 million to build, not counting land acquisition costs.
