Private-Sector Hiring Grows for Fifth Month in Texas

Texas’ unemployment rate fell to 7.2% in December 2020, down from 8.1% in November. According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the state added 64,200 nonfarm jobs last month.
Texas’ private sector added 67,600 positions, while the public sector shed 3,400 jobs last month. The national unemployment rate was 6.5% in December.

“Texas employers continue to remain steadfast as December marks the fifth consecutive month of private-sector job growth, which is a testament to their hard work and dedication,” said TWC’s Aaron Demerson.

Among the state’s metro areas, Amarillo had the lowest non-seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate at 4.9%. McAllen-Edinburg-Mission’s was highest at 11.7%.

On a year-over-year basis, all employment sectors had seasonally-adjusted job losses since December 2019 except for financial activities and professional and business services, which grew by 1% and 2%, respectively. Mining and logging had the largest job loss with employment falling 17.9%.
