Pritzker’s Signature Clears Path for Thompson Center Sale
Gov. JB Pritzker has signed a measure authorizing the sale of the James R. Thompson Center, a state office complex that has been touted as a redevelopment opportunity. The bill’s timeline calls for selling the 17-story property within 24 months.
State officials have estimated a sale of the Thompson Center could bring $300 million. The state will issue a request for qualifications within three to six months under the bill’s timeline, to be followed by a request for proposals a few months later.
Simultaneous with the property’s eventual sale, the state will relocate employees to the Michael A. Bilandic Building on North LaSalle Street and other under-utilized, state-owned or rented facilities, under the timeline of the bill signed by Pritzker.
The bill signed by Pritzker was passed by both houses of the Illinois Legislature in May 2017, but its release to the governor was stalled for nearly two years.
