Pritzker Announces $900M Plan to Rebuild Two Prisons
The state of Illinois plans to spend between $805 million and $935 million over the next three to five years to demolish and rebuild two prisons, including the historic Stateville Correctional Center.
Governor JB Pritzker announced the funding that will support projects to rebuild Logan Correctional Center in downstate Lincoln and in Stateville, about 40 miles southwest of Chicago. Stateville will be replaced with a new facility at the same site, and Logan will be rebuilt at a new location that has yet to be determined.
The state estimates the new prisons will save an average of $34 million in annual operations and maintenance. Statesville opened in 1925, and Logan opened in 1978.
“The capital funds dedicated to Stateville and Logan further demonstrate our commitment to continuing to rebuild and strengthen our state’s infrastructure,” said Pritzker in a statement. The design and buildout of the new facilities are anticipated to be completed over the next three to five years.
