Potential Portland MLB Ballpark Gets Mayor’s Backing

Potential Portland MLB Ballpark Gets Mayor’s Backing

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler is showing his support for the ongoing Portland Diamond Project’s latest proposal to turn the struggling Lloyd Center Mall into a Major League Baseball stadium. Mayor Wheeler and his staff are exploring numerous ways to bolster the plans, according to The Oregonian/OregonLive.

For years, the group behind the project has sought to bring America’s favorite pastime to Oregon’s largest city. The Portland Diamond Project aims to bring a team and ballpark to town to create jobs, develop workforce housing, and drive economic opportunities.

Portland is on a short list of cities that could get a Major League Baseball team, per MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred, if and when the league expands to 32 teams. The Lloyd Center has emerged as a front-runner after previous sites, including Zidell Yards, Terminals 1 and 2, the city’s former central post office, and Portland Public Schools’ headquarters fell through as possible locations.
