Ports Prefer Trains to Trucks
The Port of Long Beach, in a joint Supply Chain Optimization Initiative with the Port of Los Angeles, is considering shipping more cargo to the Inland Empire via trains. Supply chain experts say 750 truck trips can be reduced when trains carry double-stacked shipping containers.
Short-haul rail transport would cut the need for trucks from Riverside and San Bernardino counties, which account for nearly 20,000 Inland Empire trucking jobs. For the train concept to work, a new intermodal terminal would be built in the Inland Empire.
Previous efforts to use more rail lost steam, but the timing is now better as a result of increased cargo and concerns about air pollution. Other factors include a changed business climate, increased drayage costs, more stringent truck requirements, and greater regional congestion.
