Portman Proposes Tower on Historic Atlanta Midtown Site

Portman Holdings proposed developing as much as 700,000 square feet of office space, a 325-room hotel and a 350-unit residential tower in Atlanta’s Midtown. The Atlanta-based developer submitted plans to the state under its Development of Regional Impact program to add another tower to the Atlanta skyline.

The prized Midtown site, at 10th and Spring, houses the historic Spring Hill Mortuary. Portman plans to preserve the landmark exterior of the more than 90-year-old funeral home, as well as gardens. The nearly four-acre hilltop site overlooks Technology Square and is in an emerging market that’s becoming a draw for corporate HQs and larger occupiers.

Portman Holdings initially envisioned a larger project, though what ultimately gets approved and built could vary. Developers can submit proposals that encompass the maximum density for a site. The filing is a promising sign for the project, as Portman appears poised to move ahead with zoning and entitlement plans.
