Port Picks Protea’s Plan to Replace Seaport Village
The San Diego Unified Port District voted 6-1 in favor of Protea Waterfront Development’s Seaport San Diego, a proposed $1.2 billion Seaport Village replacement project featuring a nearly 500-foot spire. The winning team includes RCI, Thrill Corp., OdySea, AECOM and the owners of the Rancho Valencia Hotel in Rancho Santa Fe, CA.
Protea’s plan includes three hotels with 1,077 rooms, more than 388,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space, 19,130 square feet of office space, and two showcase paid attractions, a 480-foot “Spire” observation tower and a 178,490-square-foot OdySea aquarium.
The port is set to initiate exclusive discussions with Protea so it can move forward on a plan to revitalize the 36-year-old specialty retail center. Concerns remain over Protea’s ability to line up financing and meet deadlines for the proposed redevelopment project.
