Port Houston Continues Growth Momentum
Increases in tonnage, including resin exports, helped continue Port Houston’s growth in April 2019. Total tonnage has, to date, increased by 9%. Total container 20-foot equivalent units grew 13%, year to date, and 15% year-over year. Meanwhile, steel imports through Port Authority facilities grew by 31%, compared to the same time a year ago.
“The big driver of this growth is the much-anticipated surge in resin exports,” said the port’s Executive Director Roger Guenther. “It is here, and it is solid.” Resin exports grew 38%, while polyethylene exports increased by 62%.
The Port Commission also approved management’s request to award a contract for financial advisory services, that will assist with financing options related to channel infrastructure projects. An ongoing project is in place to widen and deepen the Houston Ship Channel.
