Port of Galveston Mulling Passenger Terminal for Oasis

The Port of Galveston is considering building a third passenger terminal to accommodate the Royal Caribbean’s Oasis-class ships. The Oasis ships are more than 1,180 feet long and can carry more than 6,200 passengers, but building a third cruise terminal could cost more than $100 million and would need to be ready by fall 2020.

Cost is just one factor the port officials are considering. The other concern is where to put the new terminal. One frontrunner is an area at piers 16-18, which currently houses Del Monte Fresh Produce operations. The problem there, however, is where to move Del Monte.

The Port of Galveston is home to three year-round Carnival Cruise Line ships, one year-round and one seasonal Royal Caribbean ship, and a seasonal Disney Cruise Lines ship. The port is the fourth-busiest cruise port in the United States.
