Port Authority Launches Next Phase of JFK Air Cargo Overhaul

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has signed a long-term lease to develop a state-of-the-art air cargo handling facility at JFK International Airport. Expected to be completed in 24 months, the new facility will “position JFK Airport as a major cargo handler,” said Lieutenant Gov. Kathy Hochul.

The deal with JFK Cargo LLC marks the second phase of a multi-tiered cargo modernization at the airport. The cargo-handling upgrade is occurring in tandem with the $13-billion redevelopment of the airport’s passenger terminal facilities.

JFK handled about 1.4 million tons of cargo in 2018, making it one of the top seven airports in the U.S. for cargo volume. The new facility is expected to yield an estimated 200,000 tons of additional cargo per year, 5,400 regional jobs, more than $1.8 billion in sales and an estimated $660 million in wages.
