Port Authority Brings Electric Buses to Airport Shuttle Fleet

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has agreed to procure 18 Proterra electric buses for shuttle service at John F. Kennedy International and LaGuardia airports in Queens and at Newark Liberty International Airport. Six of the buses are already in service at JFK, and the agency plans to replace all 36 diesel shuttle buses within the next two to three years.

“By providing a more sustainable airport and delivering an enhanced passenger experience, we are continuing our commitment to reduce the agency’s carbon footprint,” said Rick Cotton, the Port Authority’s executive director. It’s estimated that the 18 buses will reduce CO2 emissions by 49.5 million pounds over the buses’ 12-year lifespan.

Earlier this year, Burlingame, CA-based Proterra delivered five Catalyst buses to New York‘s Metropolitan Transportation Authority under a three-year lease program, as part of MTA’s first deployment of electric buses.
