Pols Make Renewed Push for Third Chicago-Area Airport

Lawmakers and suburban mayors are calling on Gov. J.B. Pritzker to support a long-debated third airport for the Chicago region. The project has been informally named South Suburban Airport for the time being.

“While the [Federal Aviation Administration] says Chicago needs a third airport for national capacity concerns, Illinois needs it for the inevitable economic benefits,” according to a letter signed by more than 50 regional leaders. They want Pritzker to budget $150 million for improvements related to the project.

The airport would be built with private funds, the Chicago Tribune reported. A government entity would partner with a private development group that would provide an estimated $450 million to finance construction.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel downplayed the need for such a facility. “The significant modernization programs underway at O’Hare and Midway will keep passengers connected and fuel new economic opportunities for the region,” Emanuel said.
