Plans Unveiled for Former “Ice Center”

A little more than a week after Texas Research & Technology Foundation (TRTF) acquired the Merchant’s Ice complex on San Antonio’s east side, the new owner unveiled its plans for the five-building, 120,000-square-foot former industrial site. TRTF CEO John Randolph Harig indicated that the property at 1305 E. Houston St. will be converted into an innovation center with investment fund to support early stage life science and technology companies.

Specifically, the location will focus on helping companies in San Antonio that are working in the bioscience, cybersecurity and emerging technology industries. TRTF is currently developing a master plan, with the first development focused on converting one of the buildings into a location for VelocityTX. VelocityTX is an entity that will help companies in their early phases.

TRTF’s vision is to eventually redevelop the property into a campus, with partnering ventures and other tenants leasing space.
