Planning Commission Moves to Make Outdoor Dining Permanent

The Los Angeles City Planning Commission (CPC) on Thursday approved the proposed permanent Al Fresco outdoor dining program for private property. The recommended program, originally initiated at the height of the pandemic as a relief tool for restaurant owners, would save restaurant operators both money and time when applying for Planning approvals.

“While COVID-19 emergency measures at the state and local levels granted temporary relief, they did not provide a pathway to make outdoor dining a permanent reality,” said CPC president Samantha Millman. “Our proposed updates build upon the success of LA Alfresco, making a permanent outdoor dining program accessible and financially viable for restaurants citywide.”

The proposed ordinance will next go to the Planning and Land Use Management (PLUM) Committee for consideration. If approved at PLUM, the proposed ordinance would then be considered by the full City Council. Dates for consideration by either body have yet to be determined.
