Plan to Build $95M Police Academy Gets Lawmakers’ Okay
Over protests from local residents, Chicago’s City Council approved the construction of a police and fire training academy on the West Side. Opponents of the $95-million facility maintained that the money would be better spent on job creation.
The Emanuel administration has said that the current facility is outdated, and has cited a recent U.S. Justice Department report calling on the city to beef up its training for public safety officers. “The Department of Justice recommended it, and the city needs it,” Ald. Emma Mitts said. “Not only is it the right thing to do for the city, it’s the right thing for the West Side.”
The City Council’s vote on the plan was slightly delayed, when two aldermen sought more time for opponents to be heard. Mayor Rahm Emanuel took the unusual step of adjourning that meeting, and scheduling another for two days later.
