Plan for New Bay Area City Aims for November Ballot

Amid opposition from some lawmakers and environmental groups, the prospective developers of a new city in Solano County on land adjacent to Travis Air Force Base are hoping to obtain the required 13,000 signatures to put their plan onto a ballot this November. The Los Angeles Times and the North Bay Business Journal reported that voter approval would be needed for the rezoning to implement the massive project.

Known as the East Solano Homes, Jobs, and Clean Energy Initiative, the project from the California Forever group–comprised primarily of Silicon Valley investors–seeks to create at least 15,000 jobs, give $400 million to Solano County residents for down payments on homes, create a “Travis Security Zone” around the air base where new residential and commercial development would be prohibited, and set aside more than 700 acres as the Rio Vista Parkland.

The Times reported opposition from the Solano chapter of the Sierra Club, and that state Reps. John Garamendi and Mike Thompson have raised concerns about the effects on Travis and county residents.
