Phoenix's horse track Turf Paradise sells to CA developer

Phoenix’s Turf Paradise Changes Hands, to Get New Look

Phoenix’s horse track, Turf Paradise, is in the process of being sold to a California real estate developer. Turf Paradise has been running since 1956 in the winter and spring months. It’s on over 200 acres in what used to be the edge of town. However, now it’s basically in midtown and some believe it’s in need of a new look.

The Phoenix racetrack has struggled financially and operationally over the past five years. James Watson, the managing partner of the buyer, CT Realty, says the sale includes 213 acres, of which “about half” is used for racing operations. He says for the deal to work, he’d need to develop the other half of the property. In addition, a representative of his company is lobbying the state legislature for new betting options that would increase profits at the racetrack.
