Phase II Underway on ACC’s Highland Mall Campus
Austin Community College District (ACC) began work on Phase 2 of its Highland Mall campus in North Austin. The second phase will focus on creation of a digital media center, a bioscience incubator and a culinary arts and hospitality center, complete with a restaurant staffed by ACC students.
Also developed as part of the phase will be a 2.6-acre green space, named St. John’s Encampment Commons, in honor of the land’s former owners. The land on which the campus sits was acquired in 1906 by St. John District Association, an African-American Baptist organization.
The former 3.2-million-square-foot Highland Mall on Airport Boulevard is owned by ACC and development partner Redleaf. In addition to a community college campus, the revamped Highland project will offer residential, office and retail space, affordable housing and a hotel.
