Phase II Museum Expansion Commences
McCarthy Buildings Cos. Inc. broke ground on Phase II of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston’s campus expansion on Bissonnet Street. The second phase will include construction of the 243,632-square-foot Nancy and Rich Kinder Building, which will house modern and contemporary art.
The new building will offer 126,620 square feet of underground space, and 117,012 square feet of above-grade space, leading to three floors of galleries. Also included will be a 200-seat theater, street-level café, restaurant and a parking garage with 115 spaces. The second phase is scheduled for a late 2019 completion.
McCarthy began work on the first phase of the project in late 2015, with the result being the 80,000-square-foot Glassell School of Art. The museum will start teaching classes in the new building in January 2018.
